Knowledge Management (KM) 2022 - About Ljubljana, Slovenia

The currency in Slovenia is EUR (€).

“During antiquity, a Roman city called Emona stood in the area. Ljubljana itself was first mentioned in the first half of the 12th century. Situated at the middle of a trade route between the northern Adriatic Sea and the Danube region, it was the historical capital of Carniola, one of the Slovene-inhabited parts of the Habsburg Monarchy. Ljubljana (pop. 293,000) is one of the smallest European capitals. It’s never crowded – but also never dull. Fifty thousand university students give it its youthful appeal, and as an economic and cultural hub of Slovenia, it has a lot to offer to locals and visitors” (Wikipedia, 2022, para. 2)

Arrival Airports:

  • Ljubljana Airport, Slovenia (Airport code: “LJU”) - about 20 minutes ride in a taxi, private transfer, or rental car.
  • Zagreb Airport, Croatia (Airport code: “ZAG”) - about 90 - 110 minutes ride in a taxi, private transfer, or rental car***. Be aware that you will need to cross the Croatia-Slovenia border, which will add more time. If you plan to rent a car, ensure the company allows the vehicle to be taken across the border and you have all the certifications + insurance to do so.
  • Venice Airport, Italy (Airport code: “ VCE”) - about 2 hours car ride ***Be aware that you will need to cross the Italy-Slovenia border, which will add more time. If you plan to rent a car, ensure the company allows the vehicle to be taken across the border and you have all the certifications + insurance to do so.

How to Book Transportation from/to Airports

At Ljubljana Airport you can take a taxi – negotiate the price before you sit in as the price can be from 20 and up to 55EUR. You can also take Airport Shuttle – the price for one direction is from 11EUR.
Alternately, you may elect to book your transportation directly via https://www.goopti.com/en/
There are some discussions that Uber will start operating in 2022 [more information coming soon].

Rental Car Vignettes

Please note that if you rent a car in Slovenia, Italy or Croatia, you have to check whether the vehicle has a valid Slovenian vignette. If it does not have it, you will need to purchase a vignette – every gas station sell them, or you can buy it over Internet (see bellow). The price for a passenger car vignette is 15 EUR for seven days and 30 EUR for a month. More information, including how and where to purchase the vignettes, can be found at gas stations, locations near the border, and these websites:
